I spent the evening at the Utah State Capitol supporting a friend who is driven to change a law. And if given enough time, she will. The political machine in Utah is driven by a collective wave of law makers who are driven to make our world better. They vote for bills that make our families strong. (Thank goodness that we elected them because so many of us are unable to make our families strong without being told how to do it.)
Mostly, Representatives vote for bills that are not provocative. When one Legislator breathes, and they look good on the news, the rest breathe exactly the same. They tend to follow.
In 2004, The Utah State Legislature passed a law making it impossible for two people living as a couple, but are unmarried, to adopt a child. The law was targeted at gays and lesbians. Barb is lobbying the Legislature to pass a bill to change that law and reinstate the right that was taken from her and Brooke.
Have you ever seen a gerbil in an exercise ball chase something in a frenzy? They can't stop the ball to take a look at what is behind them. And the deeper they breathe, the more clouded the ball gets. Someone has got to stop the ball!
A news reporter asked Barb, "What can you give a child that a hetrosexual couple can't?"
"Nothing," she said. "We can't give anything more to a child than a hetrosexual couple can." And in her non-judging way she continued, "And a hetrosexual couple can't give any more to a child than Brooke and I can." (Why the hell does it occur to anyone to ask that question?)
Stop the gerbils from being blinded by their clouded ball. Write your Representative to vote yes for the Adoption bill. All families deserve to exist.
