The author, Dean Koontz, was apparently researching dogs for a book when he showed up at CCI. He was given a tour and fell in love with the place and its dogs. He donated $2,000,000 to the organization which built a facility where people can stay if they are from out of town and attending advanced training.
I call it a “lodge,” while CCI calls it a dormitory, which I think diminishes its value. There are a dozen private "hotel" rooms, a vast accessible kitchen and a great room where you can make yourself at home while you are there for two weeks away from anything familiar.
I was taken with Dean’s gift and thought that someday it would be nice to thank him even if I don’t get chosen to have a dog bestowed upon me.
So, as I passed through security at the San Diego airport I tripped upon a book store that might have his most recent novel. It didn’t, but tucked away in a corner was one of his other books in paperback so I grabbed it.
It’s a best-seller, though absolutely not challenging or a high literary read, nor is it a long commitment to finish. In a miniscule way, purchasing it was a method to thank him for his donation. I’ll buy his entire collection and I hope you will too. And when I have a best-seller, I’ll donate something equally beneficial to an organization that can help someone like me—or you.
He also has a CCI dog (probably retired or a drop out) named Trixie. The facility is named after Dan, his wife, Gerda and Trixie.
